Help your students understand what goes on behind the scenes at an Australian egg farm with this video featuring egg farmer John from Tasmania. Students will learn more about each stage of the farm to fridge journey, and who is involved in getting eggs from the hen to our houses, including how he implements quality control.
- To understand how food is produced in Australia
- To explore best practice and safety measures in Australian egg farming
This video details some biosecurity measures taken by egg farmers in Australia and why they are needed in the industry, as well as taking students on the journey of an egg from the farm to the supermarket. This fits well with the Australian Curriculum: Science but would also fit in with a Healthy Eating topic in the Key Learning Area of Health and Physical Education. Consider using the following questions or the interactive lessons available here to encourage further thinking about the Australian egg industry and where our food comes from:
- What is biosecurity?
- Where does our food come from?
- How might egg farmers use science in their job?
- What does sustainable farming look like?
- Is it important for farmers to keep their animals happy?
